The Zeil Shopping District - The Zeil Shopping District information and pictures
Frankfurt am Main's oldest and busiest shopping district is located along Zeil Street
, a pedestrian mile offering the ultimate in retail shopping, from upscale shops and restaurants to popular chain retailers that extends from the Frankfurt Zoo to the Hauptwache Plaza
. Zeil Street is one of the oldest streets of commerce in Frankfurt
that once was the site of large-scale cattle trading. The area has come a long way since those early twelfth century cattle fairs, to become one of the major shopping districts in all of Germany
Most of the buildings along the Zeil were constructed after World War II, as the area was heavily bombed during the World War II. The most striking example of post war, modern architecture is the Zeilgalerie, a ten story high shopping complex, constructed of steel and glass with over 50 shops, restaurants, the customary food court and coffee cafes. The artictecual firm of Kramm and Streigal designed the Zeilgalerie in a futuristic looking, tall cylinder shape, with circular ramps instead of stairways leading to the higher floors. The top floor of the Zeil offers a breathtaking view of the Frankfurt skyline and the Main River. The Dachcafe, located on the ninth floor is an elegant, modern café decorated with potted palms with seating on the rooftop observation area.
Fashion, Electronics and Antiques
The shopping along Zeil Street offers something for everyone, from mid priced clothing chains like H& M, Esprit, Benetton and Zara to higher end shops like, Eckerle, Appelrath & Cüpper and a Kaufhof department store. The Zeigalerie is filled with numerous shops selling electronics and CDs of the latest German pop stars. Smaller boutiques, antique jewelry and furniture shops are also found along the Zeil shopping district. If all that isn't enough for the citizens of Frankfurt, a new shopping mall is planned to open along the Zeil area providing 200 additional retail stores and restaurants for a fresh, new shopping experience for Frankfurt's shoppers.
How to get to the Zeil: By U-Bahn and S-Bahn to Hauptwache or Konstablerwache station
