The Residenz - The Residenz information and pictures

The Old Residenz palace was the medieval bishop’s residence. Thanks to Archbishop Wolf Dietrich von Raitanau who built it in the 16th century it has this early baroque feeling.

The Residenz is located on Residenzplatz (Residence Square) right across the Salzburg Cathedral. The complex of buildings has more than 180 rooms and halls. Like most palaces this one has had many additions and has been redesigned many times.

Today the State rooms where the archbishops conducted business are open to the public and they impress with their decoration and design. Also worth visiting are the Audience Hall, the throne room, the Imperial Hall which is directly connected to the Gothic choir of the Franziskanerkirche (Franciscan Church). At the conference and council chambers Mozart gave his first concert at six years of age!

The Old Residenz palace is still used as a preferred location for the reception of foreign kings, and heads of state. The Residenz Gallery has a magnificent collection of paintings from the period 16th to 19th centuries.
