San Giovanni in Laterano (Basilica of St. John Lateran) is the oldest Christian church in Rome, built in AD 324. Through its long history the church was rebuilt 2 times and was destroyed by fire and earthquakes. In 1646 Borromini rebuilt the interior of San Giovanni in Laterano and in 1740 the main facade was rebuild by Alessandro Galilei.

The cloisters were built around 1220 and are quite remarkable for its different curved columns and marble mosaics.

San Giovanni in Laterano is the official seat of the Bishop of Rome - the Pope and ranks higher than all the churches in the Roman Catholic Church, even than St. Peter's Basilica in the Vatican.
