Pantheon - Pantheon information and pictures

Pantheon is one of the best known and best preserved temples of ancient Rome. It is easily recognized by the Oculus the hole at the top of its unique dome. The oculus is the connection between Earth and heaven. It was built by Marcus Agrippa in 25-27 BC but in AD 118 was rebuild by Emperor Hadrian who gave the Pantheon the look we know today.

The rotunda is 43.3 m (142f) high and has a rectangular entrance with 8 granite columns. The scientists were puzzled for many years how the ancient Romans built this large dome and finally they discovered that it was made of concrete that gets lighter the higher it goes because it was mixed with lighter volcanic stones.

Inside the Pantheon is the tomb of Rafael who was buried there in 1520. Many Italian kings chose the Pantheon as their last resting place.
