A popular tourist destination among the globe trotters Korcula is an exotic island that is an integral part of the central Dalmatian archipelago in Croatia. The sixth largest Adriatic island has stunning lush green vegetation and is renowned for its pristine natural beauty, ancient villages and towns, olive groves, vineyards and alluring bays. History - The early settlers of the island, the Greeks named it ‘Korkyra Melaina’ or Black Corfu island for being densely wooded in sixth century BC. In the first century AD, the Dalmatia region was conquered by the Romans. The seventh century witnessed the arrival of the Slavs Croats to Adriatic coast. In 1000, the island came under Venetian Regime of Peter II Orseolo, Doge of Venice. Korcula Island was ruled by Venetian, Austrian, French, Russian and English regime till Croatia’s independence.

Culture - The island boasts of an eventful history, culture and tradition that spans over thousand years. Being ruled by multiple regimes the Korcula Island has become home to numerous relics from each period of conquest. Despite the modern developments, the natives of Korcula preserve and cherish their customs related to church, community and family events. The island’s culture is a mix of Adriatic and Mediterranean which makes it a unique one among Croatia’s islands.

Climate - Similar to the climatic conditions prevailing in the entire southern part of Dalmatia, Korcula Island enjoys a moderate climate. The winters are moist and mild while the summers are sunny and sultry. The settlements that exist in the southern and western coast of Korcula Island experience a hot climate. The island receives rainfall in the months of November and December. The periodical winds also influence the climate of Korcula.

Places of interest - In Korcula historically significant buildings are juxtaposed against a captivating natural setting.

Korcula old town – Fortified by stone walls built in fourteenth century, the old town is in the shape of fish bone with narrow streets springing out of the mains street. The town has many imposing towers like Barbarigo tower, Tiepolo tower, etc.

Bishop Palace – Built in the Renaissance style, the Bishop Palace is situated near the Cathedral Sveti Marko. The Palace has a treasury with a variety of exhibits from Krocula’s glorious past.

The Cathedral Sveti Marko – An imposing edifice in the Korcula town, the cathedral was built in classic Gothic-Renaissance architectural style during the fifteenth century.

Korcula town is home to palaces built in Renaissance, Baroque and Gothic styles like Arneri Palace, Ismaeli Gabrielis palace, etc

Apart from this the major highlights of Korcula in Croatia are Museum of Korcula, House of Marco Polo, Museum of Icons, Monastery and Church Sveti Nikola, Badija Church and Monastery, sixteenth century decorative pillars, Loggia-Loza, Korcula’s Graveyard, Fortezza and beaches among others.
