Dominican Republic Travel Guide

The Dominican Republic is situated in the Caribbean region and borders with Haiti, the Caribbean Sea, and the North Atlantic Ocean. The capital of the country, Santo Domingo, is situated on the Ozama River and has a population of more than 2 million residents. Other large cities in the Dominican Republic include: La Romana, La Vega, Puerto Plata, Santiago, San Pedro de Macoris, and San Francisco de Macoris, among others.

Because of the mild and warm climate, any time is good to visit the Dominican Republic. However, the summer season, running from May to October, is characterized by higher levels of humidity and rising temperatures. The highest temperatures are measured in the desert areas, found to the southwest of the country.

Dominican Republic is a sunny country with friendly people, exceptional beaches and world class resorts. The top tourist destinations are Punta Cana, Bavaro, Puerto Plata, La Romana and Samana. In the recent years the ecotourism is on the rise and the National Parks in the Southeast enjoy more and more visitors. From the all inclusive resorts, to whale watching, ecotourism and golf this tropical paradise has it all.

The country is a multicultural place due to the multiple waves of immigration. The Dominican Republic is famous for its lovely white-sand beaches, merenge and bachata, amazing architecture, isolated islands, and incredible diversity of wild life. In view of architecture, the country has no analogue in the Caribbean. The cityscape of Santo Domingo and Santiago offer an intricate mixture of art deco, Caribbean Gingerbread, and Cuban Victorian architectural styles. Zona Colonial is an area of colonial-style Gothic architecture. Puerto Plata features a blend of Antillean, English, North American, and Victorian styles. San Pedro de Macoris contains Victorian buildings constructed by the use of concrete. On the other hand, most rural homes represent one level clapboard homes.
