Art Institute of Chicago - Art Institute of Chicago information and pictures

The Art Institute of Chicago is one of the most popular landmarks in the city. The museum itself was founded in 1879 as both a museum and an educational facility; however the Art Institute did not move into its permanent location of the Beaux Arts building until 1893.

The Beaux Arts building is considered a piece of art itself. It was designed by the Shepley, Rutan and Coolidge architectural firm from Boston, and has been awarded many accolades over the years. The Art Institute has a very elegant exterior, and is well known for the two bronze lions that stand guard over the entrance to the museum.

The Art Institute is home to an impressive permanent collection of art from many different periods. There is an extensive collection of Impressionist Art as well as the highly acclaimed works from contemporary artists such as Picasso, Warhol and Pollock.

There are exhibits featuring art from India, Japan, China and the Middle East that cover the long history of art in these countries. Many visitors enjoy the Arms and Armor exhibit which boasts a collection of armor and weaponry that spans an amazing four hundred years.

For children there is the Kraft Education Center, which is an interactive exhibit that allows children to get hands on with a variety of objects and projects. If you plan of visiting the Art Institute of Chicago, plan on spending the entire day to ensure you have enough time to view everything this amazing attraction has to offer.
